Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

However, it is best to be wary of relying on the supposed validation that comes with institutional investors. They too, get it wrong sometimes. Since institutional investors own more than half the issued stock, the board will likely have to pay attention to their preferences. Our data indicates that hedge funds own 7.7% of Apeiron Capital Investment. That catches my attention because hedge funds sometimes try to influence management, or bring about changes that will create near term value for shareholders. The company’s CEO Joel Shulman is the largest shareholder with 20% of shares outstanding. Saba Capital Management, L.P. is the second largest shareholder owning 7.7% of common stock, and Calamos Asset Management, Inc. holds about 4.6% of the company stock.

We did some more digging and found that 9 of the top shareholders account for roughly 52% of the register, implying that along with larger shareholders, there are a few smaller shareholders, thereby balancing out each others interests somewhat.

Researching institutional ownership is a good way to gauge and filter a stock’s expected performance. The same can be achieved by studying analyst sentiments. Our information suggests that there isn’t any analyst coverage of the stock, so it is probably little known.

Insider Ownership Of Apeiron Capital Investment

While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Our information suggests that insiders maintain a significant holding in Apeiron Capital Investment Corp.. It has a market capitalization of just US$216m, and insiders have US$43m worth of shares in their own names. It is great to see insiders so invested in the business. It might be worth checking if those insiders have been buying recently.

General Public Ownership

With a 11% ownership, the general public, mostly comprising of individual investors, have some degree of sway over Apeiron Capital Investment. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.
